Born in Chandler in 1901, W.G. went to Chandler and Tempe High Schools. He was a standout baseball player, as well as a good football and basketball player. After attending Tempe Normal School and playing football at the University of Arizona, W.G. came back to Chandler High to teach. He coached football, basketball and baseball for 10 years (1927-1937). His football teams won three conference championships.

The 1929 Chandler City Directory said he was a teacher at Chandler High School and that he and his wife Dorothy lived at 212 N. Washington.

The 1930 directory also said he was a teacher at the high school but that he and Dorothy lived at 271 N. Washington.

The 1931 Chandler City Directory said he was a coach at the high school and that he and Dorothy lived at 171 N. Washington.

He appears in the 1940 Chandler Resident Directory as superintendent of schools. He and Dorothy lived on the west side of north Washington,  beyond Cleveland. His work phone number was 39, and their home number was 29.

Wilfred G. (W. G.) Austin grew up in the Kyrene district west of Chandler. His parents operated a general store near the corner of today’s Ray Road and Price Road. W. G. Austin played football at University of Arizona and returned to Chandler as a teacher and coach at Chandler High School. He later served as the Superintendent of Chandler Unified School District.
