After their wedding, Harry and Bertha moved to Phoenix, Arizona. A. J. Chandler had already established himself in nearby Mesa, Arizona, and Harry went into business selling shoes. After a few years, he moved to Mesa and developed the Southside Gas and Electric Company, with a hydro-electric power plant built on a drop in the Tempe Crosscut Canal in Mesa. His plant provided electricity to Mesa and Tempe, and soon to the newly created town of Chandler.
