The Dust Bowl, one of the most severe ecological and man-made disasters in United States history, hit the Great Plains in the 1930s. It came in the midst of economic devastation caused by the 1929 stock market crash that triggered the Great Depression. In response to the devastation Americans faced, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated several New Deal programs to aid with recovery. Some of these programs, like the Resettlement Administration, and Farm Security Administration, directly impacted Arizona and Chandler.
