Dr. A. J. Chandler Park

Dr. A. J. Chandler Park, named for the city’s founder, is the park at the center of Downtown Chandler. It was dedicated dedicated in 1974, though the park itself has existed at the heart of the town since Chandler’s founding in 1912.

When the town of Chandler was founded in 1912, the park sat at the center of a commercial district. The town was built on the idea of City Beautiful, which emphasized public spaces surrounded by inspirational, grand architecture. The Commonwealth Canal ran east to west through the park. At the center of the park was a lushly landscaped circular island in the canal called The Green Spot.

Originally, the highway split to go around the edges of the park. By the 1940s, the state highway department deemed it too dangerous to continue with sending traffic around the park. Instead, the road was rerouted to split the park north and south.
