He is listed in the 1919 Chandler City Directory as a zanjero (water systems worker) for the Salt River Valley Water Users' Assn.
The 1920 directory said he was a watchman and that he and his wife Frances Phelps lived on Dakota Street.
In the 1921 directory, he is listed as an owner of the Goodyear Stage.
The 1923 and 1925 directories said he was a foreman for the Salt River Valley Water Users Assn. and lived on Dakota St.  Alberta Phelps lived with him and Frances.
In the 1926 directory, he is listed as a machinist. J. Lawrence Phelps lived with him and Frances, as well as Alberta.
