-Mr. Smith owns 80 acres of land, and the land is on that road that first leads east on Arizona Blvd., and is near a little bridge that crosses the government ditch which runs beside his farm.
With little water, he cleared 30 acres of sage brush a bit more than a year ago, and will receive about $2,000 for his crop. His total expenditure was about $100.
His barley crop reaches between 3.5 to 5 feet tall.
When he started clearing his land last fall, he was told he wouldn't get more than 15 sacks to the acre. He decided to keep deep plowing, because it would hold the water in the ground better. He has used one-half an acre foot of water at the cost of 30 cents per acre.
Before planting in December, he gave the ground a thorough irrigation, and a second one on March 15th, and the last one on April 3rd. He decided to plant in December so that the roots would grow deeper in the ground. It ended up taking a few months for it to make progress above ground.
The seed cost was $1.25 per acre, and the a $1.00 for planting per acre.
The barley will be ready for the market on June 1st.
The stand runs thirty sacks to the acre, or an average of 3,500 pounds per acre for a total of 105,000 pounds. The grain is selling for $1.50 per cwt, but is using most of the crop for the seeds which pays $2.00 per cwt. He will get about $2,000 for the crop. (Chandler Arizonan 5/2/1913)
