Thiene, Paul G.

Paul G. Thiene was a German born landscape architect.  Thiene worked for Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr., for several years before designing the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego (today's Balboa Park).  He designed the landscaping and gardens for the San Marcos Hotel, which was described in one promotional brochure for the hotel as having "long vistas of lawn flanked by groups of semi-tropical shrubs and trees; there are quiet nooks where flowers bloom the winter through; there are gracefully designed pergolas hanging heavy with roses; there is a fountain, and, as well, sparkling pools where fishes swim beneath the broad leaves of the water lillies."
