York, Rusty

A 1965 graduate of Chandler High School, Rusty York excelled in football and baseball.  He earned the starting quarterback job on the football team as a sophomore, and kept that job through his senior year.  His senior season he earned All-State Honorable Mention for his work at QB.  Rusty also earned the starting center field position on the baseball team his sophomore year.  He became a starting pitcher his junior and senior seasons.  Rusty earned several All-State honors in baseball.  He attended Phoenix College, where he played quarterback and led the team to the 1965 AZJCAA Conference title.  On the baseball diamond, he helped the team to the AZJCAA conference championship and earned All-Conference honors.  The team went on to the National Junior College Championships, where Rusty earned All-Tournament honors.  That summer he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants.  He played in their minor league system at Fesno (of the California League) and Medford (of the Northwest League).  Rusty became a Northwest League All Star.  He was drafted into the Army and upon discharge, Rusty joined the Phoenix Blazers of the Continental Football League, playing one season at running back and backup quarterback.  Rusty got interested in tennis, and is now a tennis coach, serving as private teacher to Harrison Ford for eight years.
