Cleveland School
Chandler’s first school was known as the Cleveland School.
Known as the Grammar School when it opened in 1913, Cleveland School was the only elementary school in Chandler until Hartford School opened in 1957.
It was located on Chandler Boulevard (which used to be called Cleveland).
Cleveland School originally had nine classrooms. It was expanded several times and eventually had 15 classrooms, a fully stocked library, and an auditorium. Students used the Chandler High School Cafeteria for lunch after it was built in 1922.
Junior high students in Chandler attended their classes in the Cleveland Grammar School. When that school became too small for so many students, classes were moved to Chandler High School. From 1918 to 1922, high school classes were also held in Cleveland School.
The first principal was Anna Seavers, who also served as a teacher.
A school bell in the steeple called the children to classes. That same bell has recently been erected at Austin Field and is now used as a victory bell for athletic events.
