Biscuits Made Easy

2 cups self rising flour
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 stick butter

  1. Combine flour and whipping cream, stirring until just blended.

  2. Transfer dough to lightly floured surface and knead 10 times.

  3. Roll to 1/2 inch thick and cut with a round cutter

  4. Melt butter in Dutch oven and dip each biscuit into the butter and place in the oven.

  5. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Spotted Pup

4 cups milk
1 cup rice
1/2 cup raisins
1 tablespoon butter or margarine

 

Quick Dutch Oven Cobbler

3 cans fruit pie filling of your choice
1 box yellow cake mix
1 can lemon lime soda
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
pinch of nutmeg

  1. Grease 12 inch Dutch Oven.

  2. Put fruit and vanilla in Dutch oven, sprinkle half of the cinnamon over the fruit and stir.

  3. Evenly sprinkle dry cake mix over fruit.

  4. Pour soda ovcer everything and spinkle remaining cinnamon, the brown sugar and the nutmeg.

  5. Bake 30-45 minutes with 15 coals on top of pan and 10 coals under the oven

 

Coloado Stew with Dumplings

  1. Cut bacon into pieces, cover them with water, boil until done

  2. Dice some potatoes and onions into the pot and cook some more.

  3. Make up a recipe of baking powder biscuits, pinch off small pieces and drop onto the boiling stew, cook until done.

As you see, there are no measurements or exact cooking instructions given in this recipe.  For chuck wagon cooks, each stew was different depending on what ingredients the cook had on the wagon at that time.  This recipe provides a general outline for cooks.
