Hartford School

Hartford Elementary School was built in September 1957, originally surrounded by cotton and alfalfa fields.

The first year it was opened, 425 students in grades 1-5 attended. In 1959-1960, enrollment jumped to 485 because double sessions were held in one first and one in second grade. An even greater increase was seen in 1959-1960 to 512 because two first grades and one second grade held double sessions.

According to Principal H.V. Wingfield, these double sessions were necessary to take care of eligible pupils even though Cleveland Elementary school was crowded to capacity.

The Hartford School had 13 classrooms, a library, a large cafetorium, restrooms and administrative offices. Mr. Wingfield had a staff of 13 teachers , a librarian, and a part time music teacher. Music classes were held on stage in the cafetorium.

Mr. Wingfield was also the principal of Winn School.
