During World War II Chandler erected a billboard in the Downtown Park which bore the names of every resident of the Chandler District who enlisted in the military during the war. At the top left were the names of women who served. At the top right were the names of those who gave their lives “that we stay free.”
The billboard remained standing in the southeast corner of the park for several years after the conclusion of the War. In the 1950s it was replaced with a memorial plaque. The plaque still stands in the southeast corner of A. J. Chandler Park.
