Other Alphabet Agencies
The Picturing Home exhibition tells the story of federal agency projects in Chandler including the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration. A number of other federal agencies were also created in the 1930s to aid people across the nation. Here are a few that had lasting impacts:
CCC- Conservation Civilian Corps
-A work relief program that employed young, unmarried men on environmental projects during the Great Depression.
-The CCC worked on many projects including: planting trees; constructing trails, picnic sites, golf courses, bridges, and roads; and preventing and fighting forest fires
WPA- Works Progress (later Projects) Administration
-An ambitious employment program that put roughly 8.5 million Americans to work
-Some projects focused on building infrastructure like hospitals, schools, and storm drains
-Other projects funded employment in the arts (writers, actors, musicians, muralists, and more)
FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
-Created to protect banks and people storing money with banks
-Developed following the stock market crash of 1929 when people withdrew their money from banks in cash, causing a devastating wave of bank failures across the country
-Still in operation today
REA- Rural Electrification Administration
-Provided federal loans to bring electricity to rural areas across the United States
FHA- Federal Housing Administration
-Created to improve housing standards and conditions, reduce foreclosures for families, aid home financing, and increase home construction employment
FLSA- Fair Labor Standard Act
-Established minimum wage and overtime pay
-Prohibited employment of minors
