Chandler’s first Latino mayor, driven by service

Raul Navarrete was born and educated in Chandler. He graduated from Chandler High, where he was an award winning athlete, in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II

Born and schooled in Chandler and graduating from Chandler High in 1943 as an award winning athlete, Navarette returned home after serving in the military. Locally, it was said he gave his heart and soul to service of city and state and led innumerable youth, civic, military and church organizations. He served on Chandler City Council from 1966-76 and was elected mayor in 1972. A school, a park and a National Guard Armory bear his name and legacy.
