Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company
-William T. Grant from Denver, Colorado, came as a representative of the company to inspect the idea of creating an exchange in Chandler.
They would add enough telephones for every 1.5 to 2 miles. The phone would cost two dollars for homes per month, and three dollars a month for a business. (Chandler Arizonan 1/17/1913)
-The company will be sending a man to Chandler in the next few days to get enough subscribers here to put in a switchboard. A total of 25 is needed, but it is estimated about 19 will come from businesses, and homes in town.
They will now provide local weather to all it's customers from the U.S. Weather Bureau in Phoenix. All the customers have to do is call it's exchange, and ask the operator. (Chandler Arizonan 5/30/1913)
-H.D. McVay and Hugh Gurison, representatives of the company were in Chandler this week to see about setting up an exchange here. They were surprised to see how rapidly the city is growing. (Chandler Arizonan 6/20/1913)
-Mrs. Bessie Wright is listed in the 1916 and 1917 Chandler City Directories as the exchange manager. The 1921 directory said Mrs. Orpha Barr was manager and that it was located on Oregon 2 north of Buffalo. The 1923 directory listed Mrs. Blanche Hawkins as manager, and said it was at 127 N. Oregon.
The 1929, 1930 and 1931 directories said Mrs. Lillie Mitchell was manager. The 1929 directory gave the address as 132 N. Arizona, and the 1930 directory said it was 32 N. Oregon. The 1931 and 1932 directories showed it being at 120 N. Oregon. The 1932 Phoenix Telephone Directory, Chandler section, said its phone number was 135.
Chandler city directories show that it gave jobs to many women.
