-Mr. Heffner has lived in Iowa, the Klondike, Washington, and then travelled to the Salt River Valley and decided upon Chandler.

He was a lawyer, prosecuting attorney, but now is a farmer.  He has lived here for two years in June.  He married his wife about a year ago.  She is a talented painter, and decorates their home with her work.

He has 40 acres of, "the finest alfalfa land in the valley," says Heffner.

He has two and a half acres in orchard which has peahes, pears, plums, and apples.

He has two colts in prime condition, also a thoroughbred Poland China boar, and a fine lot of sows and young pigs.

He uses 24 boxes to prevent gophers from getting into his land and to irrigate it.  The boxes are as wide as the main ditch which is about four feet across.  They connect with the main ditch with the openings being 10 x 12 while the outlet is below the surface which forces the water upwards.  The boxes keep the banks intact also, and he can leave the water on overnight without having to watch it.

The boxes cost about $50, but it saves the time of one or two men.  (Chandler Arizonan 4/18/1913)
