Ray, Mario

Mario is the son of former Chandler High School standout athlete Wardlow Ray who was inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Mario started pole vaulting at age 8 in the family backyard. In his junior year he broke the state record, vaulting over 15ft. In his senior year he improved his own state record to 15’ 2 1/2” Mario was nationally ranked in the top five for prep vaulters in 1967. He attended Brigham Young University where he topped 15’6” before back injuries forced him to retire.
