Finding Home: Abandoned Barracks

In 1937, Lange visited Chandler for the first time, on assignment from the Farm Security Administration. She took photographs of a group of people outside their homes in Chandler. The building, a barrack, was built in 1917-18 by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Ocotillo, south of Chandler. In her captions, Lange drew attention to the fact that white families who fled the Dust Bowl were living and working with Mexican migrant laborers.
