03: Huhugam vs. Hohokam

Huhugam, meaning “those who are gone,” is the word the modern day O’odham or Pima use to reference their ancestors.  Huhugam is a general term for all the O’odham who lived before whereas Hohokam has a more scientific meaning.  Hohokam is the name archaeologists adapted in 1884 from Huhugam to use for the prehistoric culture that existed from 450- 1450 C.E. along the rivers of central and southern Arizona.  Hohokam references the objects and the culture of these prehistoric people.
