The 1916 city directory lists him as a meat cutter for Delmer Williams. His wife is Lucy M. In the 1917 directory
he appears as a meat cutter for Harry Lukin and his wife appears as Lucy N.
The 1918 Chandler City Directory lists Joseph (married to Lucille) as a co-owner of Bowman & Smith grocers. The other owner is Rance L. Bowman.
In the 1919 directory Joseph Smith, married to Lucille, is listed as an owner of Smith & Gaylord.
The 1920 directory said he was part-owner of Smith & Shumate, a grocery store and that he and Lucy lived on California St. (1920, 1921)
They appear in the 1921 directory but no occupation is listed for him.
The 1923 directory said he was the manager of J and J Market and that he and Lucy lived at 124 S. California.
In the 1925 directory, he is listed as a stock buyer. He and Lucy had the same address on California.
The 1926 directory said he was a cattle buyer and gave their address as 121 S. Caifornia.
The 1929 and 1930 directories  said he was the city's constable and that he and Lucy lived at 112 S. California.  The 1931 and 1932 directories said he was a deputy sheriff and that he and Lucy N. had the same address.Â
He may be the same as Joe Smith who had been a city councilman in the early 1920s.The 1932 Phoenix Telephone Directory, Chandler section, said Joe Smith lived at 224 S. California and had the phone number 53.
