03. Desegregation
For many years, African American youth in Chandler had to attend Carver High School in downtown Phoenix, over 20 miles away. In 1949, five years before the Supreme Court ended school segregation, Chandler High School ended its segregation policies and allowed African American students to attend. Robert Turner, pictured in the photo above, was one of the first African American students to attend Chandler High.
