Soil Salinization Theory
Soil Salinization Theory
This theory suggests that the Hohokam collapse was caused by the salinization of their farm fields after constant irrigation with alkaline water. It is known, however, that salinization occurs in the Salt River Valley after only fifty years of irrigation. The Hohokam, then, would have had to have figured out a system for dealing with salinization relatively soon after settling in the Valley. The fact that they successfully irrigated the Valley for 1,000 years indicates that salinization did not cause their society to collapse.
