Coach Ernst is one of the most respected basketball coaches in Arizona. He coached Junior Varsity for 3 years before becoming head varsity coach at Chandler High School in 1974. His teams won 101 games and lost only 64. He was named Coach of the Year by the Arizona Republic in 1976 and 1984. He is currently coaching at Mt. View High School in Mesa, where he recently won his 8th state championship and was named the East Valley Tribune's 2011 Coach of the Year.  Gary was inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
